Social Media Updates 2026: What’s Changing Across Platforms (Updated Monthly)

Here are the October 2026 social media updates that change how people find you, and how you buy ads. This was the month feeds started taking requests.

Social Media Updates July 2026

For years, the algorithm guessed what people wanted. In October, people started telling it.

Facebook now lets users type the topics they want in Feed and Reels. YouTube added feeds you build from a prompt and put its AI search on phones and TVs. And YouTube Shorts now pushes original content over re-uploads.

Here’s your filter for October: if a change lets viewers ask for what they want, make sure your content answers a clear question. If a change lets AI build your ads, test it on one small campaign before you trust it with a budget.

Key Takeaways

  • Instagram: You can now film a Reel while the one you’re copying plays in a corner, and design carousels inside Edits.
  • YouTube: Shorts favor original content, and Subscriptions moves off the bottom bar into the Home top bar.
  • X (Twitter): X Lift builds your ad from a URL and a goal, and Premium is now one subscription with five tiers.
  • Meta / Facebook & Threads: Facebook users can now type what they want in Feed and Reels, and Ads Super Burst goes to general availability.
  • TikTok: The TikTok Ad Network opens to US advertisers, and TikTok Shop adds a 3-Day Delivery badge before Black Friday.
  • LinkedIn: CTV ads are now in Google DV360, and post authors can pin a comment.

October 2026 Social Media Updates

The biggest change this month isn’t a new format. It’s who decides what shows up. Facebook, YouTube and Instagram all gave people more direct ways to ask for content, by typing it, prompting it, or searching it like a question. That means vague content with no clear topic gets harder to find, and content that clearly answers “what is this for?” gets easier.

Instagram Updates October 2026

1. Use a Reel as a reference while you film

Tap the three-dot menu on any Reel under 90 seconds and pick “Use as reference.” The Reel plays in a small window you can move, pause and replay while you film your own version. It’s rolling out now, on iOS first. Recreating a trend just got much faster.

2. Carousel editor in Edits

You can now build and edit Instagram carousels inside the Edits app. Arrange photos and videos on a canvas, then add Edits fonts, text styles, layouts and stickers. It’s live on iOS now, with Android coming soon.

3. Edits adds audio links, topic discovery and Kits

Creators can now link the sound in a Reel so viewers tap straight through to it. Topic discovery shows which topics your followers care about most, and it’s limited to creators with 10,000+ followers for now. Kits save your go-to visual style so every Reel matches. Edits introduced Kits, letting you save and reuse your favorite styles, along with 50 new video effects and a library of entrance and exit animations.

4. More topics for Reels Trending Ads

Reels Trending Ads, which place your ad next to trending Reels on Instagram and Facebook, now has 15 always-on topics. New ones include Home & Garden and Spanish-language content, plus seasonal holiday and football and basketball lineups. It’s open to all advertisers heading into Q4.

Remember: If your Reels are part of a linked series, save the list of episodes now. The series option is reportedly going away (see Features Going Away).

YouTube Updates October 2026

1. Shorts now favor original content

YouTube changed Shorts recommendations to rank original content higher. Re-uploads with nothing added get less reach. Small technical edits and templates don’t count as adding something, but your own commentary, edits or storytelling do. If you repost creator clips, expect less reach in the Shorts feed.

2. Subscriptions moves to the top of Home, plus new feeds

On mobile, the Subscriptions tab leaves the bottom bar and moves into the Home top bar as “Subs,” next to new Live, Music and Movies & TV feeds. Custom feeds let viewers build a feed from a typed prompt, rolling out to signed-in US viewers using YouTube in English. Subscriber-driven views may shift as a result.

3. Ask YouTube comes to mobile and TV

YouTube’s AI search, where viewers ask full questions and follow-ups, now works on the mobile app and on TVs with voice, not just the web. It’s live for US viewers. Titles, descriptions and chapters that answer a specific question matter more now.

4. Hacked channels get frozen automatically

When YouTube flags a channel as possibly hacked, it now pauses uploads, going live, custom thumbnails and making private videos public. Viewers can still watch, and monetization isn’t touched. Review usually takes about 24 hours, and you’ll see a banner in Studio.

5. AI-generated songs get a label on YouTube Music

YouTube Music now labels songs made mainly with generative AI on the player page. YouTube says the label will come to the main app later. If you use AI-made music, expect it to be marked.

Remember: Rewrite the titles and descriptions of your top 5 videos so each one answers a clear question. Ask YouTube and custom feeds both match on what a video is about.

X (Twitter) Updates

1. X Lift builds your ad for you

Enter your business URL and a goal, and X’s AI writes the ad copy, makes the images and builds the campaign, including targeting, once you set a budget. It’s aimed at first-time and small advertisers. X hasn’t said which regions have it yet.

2. Video editor with editable captions and Grok translation

X shipped a redesigned in-app video editor. You can fix auto-captions by hand, ask Grok to correct them, or have Grok translate them into another language. Captions in more than one language help native video reach more people.

3. One subscription replaces separate Premium plans

“The X Subscription” has five tiers, from free up to “Ultra” at $200 a month. Every plan includes X Premium features plus different levels of AI access. It’s rolling out region by region, starting in the US, and existing subscribers can keep their plan or switch.

4. Grok Bot can now monitor X for you

Grok Bot can search and read posts on X to spot trends, track brand mentions and find opportunities from plain questions. X says it’s available to all users, but Grok Bots come with Grok or Cursor subscriptions, from about $20 a month.

5. MLB Gametime hub

X’s live sports hub, with scores, stats, team content and creator posts, now covers MLB, following the NFL version in August. Sports and sponsorship brands get one more place to show up around live games.

Meta Updates (Facebook & Threads)

1. Facebook users can now type what they want in their feed

“Your algorithm,” in the three-dot menu, lets people add and manage the topics they want in Feed and Reels. After tapping “Interested” or “Not interested,” Facebook may ask them to describe what they want in their own words. Meta says language models now help ranking read those requests in real time, so your Page’s organic reach depends more on matching what people ask for.

2. New admin tools in Forum, the Facebook Groups app

Group admins on Forum get Admin AI, which drafts posts and tags pending posts as likely within or against the group’s rules. There are also custom auto-moderation rules, a shared content calendar that schedules up to five posts at once, and pinned comments. Forum is available in the US.

3. New Meta ad tools from Advertising Week

Customer Lifecycle Strategy is now available to all advertisers. Advantage+ can now turn static images into AI video, and that’s generally available. Ads Creative Studio is rolling out to more advertisers. The conversational campaign tools Meta showed are still in testing.

4. Ads Super Burst goes to general availability

Meta’s Ads Super Burst is moving to general availability this month, rolling out in phases. First Impression Ads, announced in the same post, is still a US test.

5. Threads adds bio stickers and an NFL commentary team

You can now add stickers to your Threads bio, a small way to give a brand profile some personality. Threads also named “Team Threads,” a group of former NFL players, commentators and creators who’ll host primetime Live Chats starting in November.

Remember: Check that your Page’s posts clearly say what topic they’re about in the first line. Facebook users now pick topics, and vague posts won’t match them.

TikTok Updates October 2026

1. TikTok Ad Network opens to US advertisers, plus an MCP connector

US advertisers can now reach people on about 400,000 third-party apps through the TikTok Ad Network. TikTok for Business MCP is now a connector across several AI platforms, so AI assistants can work with your TikTok ads. Smart+ campaigns can add these placements automatically, so check your placement reports.

2. TikTok Shop adds a 3-Day Delivery badge and box-free returns for Black Friday

A new 3-Day Delivery badge marks products expected within three business days. New this fall, US shoppers can return eligible orders without a box or label at about 10,000 Happy Returns locations. TikTok Shop’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday campaign runs November 11–30.

LinkedIn Updates

1. LinkedIn CTV ads in Google Display & Video 360

You can now buy LinkedIn’s Connected TV ads in Google DV360 and keep LinkedIn targeting like job title, industry and seniority. It’s US targeting only for now, and you sign up through your LinkedIn or Google rep.

2. Pinned comments, a Creator dashboard and digital business cards

Post authors can now pin a comment to the top of the discussion. A new Creator dashboard puts performance, content and earning tools in one place, rolling out globally in the coming weeks. Digital business cards built from your profile roll out over the coming months.

3. Post LinkedIn jobs from Claude

Small businesses can describe a role to Claude, which drafts a LinkedIn job post. You approve it, it goes live for free, and Hiring Pro handles finding and shortlisting candidates. Copilot support is coming soon.

Remember: Pin your best answer or a key link as the top comment on your next three posts. It’s free, and it keeps the conversation on point.

Monthly Trend Spotlight

AI now builds the ad, not just the copy. X Lift turns a URL into a full campaign, Meta turns static images into video ads, and TikTok’s MCP connector lets AI assistants work inside your ad account. Platforms want more small advertisers, and handing setup to AI is how they get them. Test these on one small campaign and compare against your own build before you hand over a real budget.

Features Going Away This Month

  • Instagram Reels series links (reported). Instagram is reportedly removing the option to link Reels into a series, ending October 28. This comes from industry reports, not an official Instagram post.
  • YouTube Subscriptions tab on mobile. The Subscriptions tab leaves the bottom bar and moves into the Home top bar as “Subs.”

What These Updates Mean for Your Strategy

If you’re an agency: AI ad builders like X Lift and Meta’s AI video are about to show up in client conversations. Run one side-by-side test per platform so you have real numbers when clients ask. Also update any client report or guide that still lists the old X Premium tiers.

If you’re a small business: X Lift and Meta’s AI video were built for you, so they’re worth one small test. On LinkedIn, you can now post jobs from Claude for free. And on Facebook, make the first line of each post say clearly what it’s about.

If you manage multiple locations: Make sure each location’s posts name the city or neighborhood. When people ask for topics on Facebook or question-style searches on YouTube, local detail is what helps you match. If you sell on TikTok Shop, check which products qualify for the 3-Day Delivery badge before November 11.

For everyone: Write every post so it clearly answers one question. Feeds that take requests reward content with a clear topic.

Take This into November

October’s pattern points one way. Platforms are giving people more control over what they see, and giving advertisers more AI to build what they show. Expect more prompt-built feeds and more AI-assisted ad setup in November, plus a wave of holiday shopping features as TikTok Shop’s Black Friday campaign starts on November 11.

Before November starts, test one thing: rewrite your next five posts so the first line names the topic and the question it answers. Then compare their reach with your last five.

All of this means more posts written to a clear topic, across more platforms, in less time before the holidays. A scheduling tool like SocialPilot helps you plan those posts per platform and keep each location’s version on track.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Facebook’s “Your algorithm” feature?

It’s a space in the three-dot menu where Facebook users add and manage the topics they want in Feed and Reels. Facebook may also ask people to describe in their own words what they want more or less of. For Pages, it means posts with a clear topic are easier to match.
